Lambchop Rasboras make an absolutely captivating addition to any aquarium.  Their bodies are mostly a bright red or orange color, but they are named for the black or dark purple mark on their sides that resembles a lambchop in its shape.  The combination of these bold colors really makes these fish stand out from all others, especially when they are paired with dark-colored substrate.  Males tend to be more colorful than the females, and their lambchop markings are usually more pointed in appearance.  The females are often rounder in shape, and their lambchop markings are more rounded as well.  Their diminutive size makes these fish great for nano tanks!
Lambchop Rasboras are fairly easy to care for, as long as they live in stable water parameters with good water quality.  Like all rasboras and danios, these fish are completely peaceful and totally safe to keep with other fish (as long as the other fish are peaceful, too!), snails, shrimp, and live plants.   They are a schooling fish and can really only thrive in groups, which is why we sell them in groups of 6 and 12.  The more of these fish there are in your tank, the less shy they will act.  When these fish are healthy and are placed in a well-cycled and densely planted aquarium, it is fairly likely that they will spawn, and you may see fry start to appear.  They do best in tanks that have plants, rock, or driftwood that provides them with cover.

Lambchop Rasboras are omnivores and are not too picky about eating.  They will likely eat fish flakes or pellets, but they need a varied diet in order to breed (if breeding them is something you are interested in).   Experienced keepers of these fish have found that their colors are brought out best when they are also fed  some frozen or live foods (such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and insect larvae). They will also eat blanched vegetables, such as lettuce, zucchini, kale, etc.  We are one of the only suppliers in the United States that offers tank-raised Lambchop Rasboras.  They ship out as juveniles or young adults that are about a half inch in length, and they may grow up to 1½ inches.  These fish are also sold under the names “Porkchop Rasboras” and “False Harlequin Rasbora.”

  • Interesting schooling behavior, expecially in very large schools
  • Peaceful disposition with fish and peaceful invertebrates including dwarf shrimp
  • Very active and noticeable fish in any aquarium
  • Ideal for nano and planted aquariums

Acclimating fish:

  • If received after 24-48 hours, slow drip acclimating fish to quarantine tank.
  • If received after 2+ days, equalize water temp by floating bag. Try not to pour bag water into aquarium, drain over net externally and drop fish into quarantine tank.
