Rotala Macrandra

Rotala Macrandra Green is a classic plant for Dutch style aquariums as it grows very upright and develops stunning colours. It is relatively demanding which means it needs pressurised CO2 and decent fertilisers in order to show it’s true potential. Once established, it really grows fast – up to 10cm per week which means it needs regular trimming. Replant any cuttings as they will take quickly.

Oddly enough IF you limit nitrate levels, it will show off better red colours but you will need to make sure your phosphate levels are good (1.5 – 2.0 ppm) and not too much nitrate (10ppm or less.) otherwise you’ll get stunted growth. Be aware that limiting nitrate levels can often have a knock on effect for other plants as it’s a core macro nutrient which means plants need plentiful supplies to prosper.  An incorrect amount of either of these nutrients will lead to stunted growth or discolored leaves.

Do not make drastic changes to the aquarium. Unstable parameters will result in melt and rotting of the aquarium plant.  CO2 injection and quality aquarium soil will yield better growth.
