While most of us enjoy the warmth of summer, it can be disastrous for your aquarium.

How Fish React to Changes in Water Temperature
Some fish like Discus, Clown Loaches and Rams enjoy temperatures in the mid to upper 20’s and most tropical fish prefer 23° to 26° C. However, common goldfish do best between 16° to 20°C and the fancy goldfish should be kept between 20°and 23°C. When water temperature rises, your fish’s metabolic rate and activity level increase, which means they need more oxygen. Also, water holds less dissolved oxygen as the temperature rises which creates more danger for the fish. In your marine aquarium it is even more serious because saltwater holds less oxygen than freshwater at the same temperature. Make sure you have an accurate thermometer on your aquarium and keep an eye on it as the weather heats up.

Signs of Stressed Fish During Hot Weather
The first sign of stress to your fish during hot weather is rapid gill movement or gasping for air at the surface. Corals and anemones will close up and their polyps or tentacles will retract. Algae growth may increase and the water may begin to turn cloudy due to a bloom of heterotrophic bacteria. When your fish are stressed, their immune systems are compromised and they’re more likely to get sick. In severe cases, your filtration system may not function as efficiently and toxic ammonia and nitrite levels may begin to rise.

A budget friendly option to reduce your aquarium temperature 3 to 5°C instead of expensive chillers, suited well for small tanks. Easy to install, attaches to the side of your tank with two brackets.
